he Lanzhou Foci Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. manufacturers and distributes traditional Chinese medicines, western drugs, and raw herbs. It was established in 1929 in Shanghai and was originally called the Shanghai Foci Medicine Factory. Its founder, Mr. Yu Hui Guan, was a devout Buddhist, and from the phrase “Our merciful Buddha rescues all living creatures” named his factory Foci, or “Benevolent Buddha”.
Shanghai of the 1930’s was quite modern, and Mr. Yu eagerly incorporated the technological innovations of the time. His vision was to modernize Chinese medicine, and his factory spearheaded the use of mechanical equipment in herb extraction. Foci products became known for their quality, efficacy and ease of use, and exports to Southeast Asia and neighboring Japan began in 1931.
